How to make VS 2008 and TFS 2010 work together

You can check-in local VS 2008 solutions to TFS 2010. In order to make it work you need these :

  1. Visual Studio 2008 with SP1
  2. Team Explorer 2008. Watch out, Team explorer need to be installed after SP1, if you installed first TE 2008 and then patched VS2008 it won’t work. If you are in this situation, just re-install the SP1.
  3. and finally, you need the obscure “Forward Compatibility Update ” from MS available here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=cf13ea45-d17b-4edc-8e6c-6c5b208ec54d

To access an TFS2010 server just start typing the url http:// in the “Add Team Fuondation Server” dialog….. and then…. Visual Studio understands you are typing directly an url and disables “protocol” and “port” options. See below.

VS 2008 Add Team Server Dialog

That’s mean you’re nearly ok. Then type you’re server url following the tfs2010 pattern http://[tfsserver]:[port]/[vdir]/[projectCollection]. For me it worled without [projectcllection].
